5 Awesome Games You Need To Play This Summer

League of Legends is currently the most popular game in the world with over 100 million active monthly subscribers. Closely behind in 2nd place is Counterstrike: Global Offensive, which still plays second fiddle to the League of Legends powerhouse despite pulling in almost 1.9 million concurrent viewers during this month’s PGL Major event.

Although these are fun games, the novelty of playing them can quickly wear off, especially if you hit a losing streak.

If you’re fed up of losing to CS:GO hackers or League of Legends smurfs then maybe it’s time to try a different game. After all, there are plenty of other fun games out there which are completely free to play.

To help you find the best games to play this summer, we’ve handpicked some of our favorite games that you’re bound to love.

Here are 5 of our favorite games that you need to play this summer.

Battlerite

The first game on our list of games like LoL is Battlerite. This fast-paced game lets you jump straight into the action without any of that boring leveling. Other MOBAs have a very long winded tutorial that require you to reach a certain level before you’re allowed to play competitively, but not Battlerite.

This game is all about fighting each other and encourages you to do so in the arena. With shrinking arenas, special skill shots and top down bullet time, it’s like having a never-ending team fight in LoL. If you love fighting and dueling but hate leveling and waiting around, then this game is a must try.

Although this game does currently cost $19.99 for early access, if you don’t feel like paying then you’ll just have to wait until its official release.

Heroes of the Storm

Next up on our list is Heroes of the Storm. This game is Blizzard’s shot at the MOBA genre and is full of traditional and modern MOBA characteristics. Featuring heroes and champions from the Blizzard universe, this game lets players battle it out as epic heroes including Diablo, Kerrigan and Arthas. If you’re a fan of Blizzard games or have played other titles before, then you’ll love this mashup.

Available to play for free online, the game is very similar to League of Legends in that is uses the same 3 lane system you are used to. The only difference is that Heroes of the Storm consists of over 10 different maps to help spice up the gameplay and to stop you from becoming bored.

If you’re looking for something simple to learn that will give you countless hours of gameplay, then Heroes of the Storm is a great alternative.

Smite

Developed by Hi-Rez Studios, the guys behind the first person shooter Tribes: Ascend, Smite is their latest success that focuses on the MOBA genre. Unlike other MOBA games though, Smite has a very unique and different play style. Traditionally MOBAs use a top down view of the map where players point and click to move. Instead of this, Smite uses a 3rd person over the shoulder look and primarily utilizes the WASD keys for moving.

This unique twist opens up a whole new level of gameplay including blind spots, better control of your character, and fast paced action. Getting to grips with the new camera system might take some getting used to, but once you do you’ll be able to experience games in a completely new perspective.

If League of Legends is too slow for your liking and you want to experience something more fast paced and unique then Smite is definitely worth a try.

Paragon

Similar to Smite, Paragon is a new epic MOBA that has recently entered its beta phase but is already starting to look like an incredible game. Made using the Unreal Engine, this MOBA is all about the visuals and graphics. With stunning champions and scenery, this MOBA will take you to a new world of insane detail which you have never seen before.

Using the same over the shoulder viewing perspective as Smite, you really get to see how detailed this game is while battling your enemies. Every spell, sword swing and attack leave incredible particles that add a whole new depth to the game. Combine this with its unique inventory item system, and you’ve got yourself a great League of Legends alternative.

Currently, Paragon is still in beta and is nowhere near the finished product. Getting in on the action while it’s still in beta is a great idea as it allows you to learn the game, collect rare items and grow with the game. If you’re sick of below average cartoon graphics and want something with a WOW factor, then Paragon is the game for you.

Awesomenauts

Unlike the other games on this list, Awesomenauts is in a class of its own. Completely two dimensional, this game looks more like an arcade platformer than a MOBA, but don’t be deceived.

Awesomenauts is a 3v3 platform MOBA that consists of battling each other in cartoon style. With plenty of crazy champions to choose from and loads of exciting maps, this game isn’t your average MOBA.

If we could compare it to any other games, we’d say it’s a cross between Super Smash Bros and League of Legends. The goal remains the same, to destroy each other’s towers and base, just everything is much flatter!

If you enjoy playing retro platformers and classics such as Super Mario, Lemmings, Pac Man and Donkey Kong then this is the game for you. Grab two of your friends and get ready for an epic battle.
